Mixing up scenarios and terrain is one of the fastest ways to keep Kings of War games feeling fresh. My new kowsetup.streamlit.app does exactly that—click one button and it serves a random scenario from the matched-play list alongside a community-favourite map (think Epic Dwarf layouts) so you can be rolling dice in seconds.(dash28.org)
Why Random Setup Matters
Kings of War’s third-edition core book gives us a dozen matched-play scenarios, each nudging list design and on-table decisions in a slightly different direction.(dash28.org) Veteran TOs often balance events by mixing those scenarios with curated terrain packs such as Lars’ Epic Dwarf maps.(dash28.org) A fresh combination each round not only tests broader tactical skills but also reduces “gotcha” moments tied to rehearsed deployments.(kowforum.com)
A Tiny Utility, Not Another Companion
Plenty of heavyweight tools already exist—the official Mantic Companion handles list building and event management, for example.(companion.manticgames.com) By contrast, this app is deliberately lightweight, in the same spirit as hobby projects showcased on the Streamlit community boards.(discuss.streamlit.io, discuss.streamlit.io) It aims to live alongside staple resources like Dash28’s random scenario page rather than replace them.(dash28.org)
What the App Does Today
- Random scenario: Pulls from the matched-play missions.
- Random map: Chooses one JPEG from a local copy of popular terrain packs (i.e. Epic Dwarf and Blackjack).(dash28.org, reddit.com)
- One-click UX: The whole interface is a “SET UP” button; results appear instantly with the scenario blurb and map image side by side.
That’s it. No login, no ads, no export menu.
Minimal-Viable on Purpose
Starting small keeps feedback loops tight. Early community utilities—like Dash28’s first randomiser or Reddit’s Battle Maps generator—grew quickly once players chimed in with concrete suggestions.(reddit.com) I’m taking the same path: ship a working core and let real games point out the pain points.
Where Could It Go Next?
I have a shortlist, but your input matters more. Which of these would actually help your club or event?
- Scenario filters (e.g., exclude Pillage if your board lacks objective tokens)
- Army-matchup suggester for practice nights (pair two factions and spit a scenario suited to the match-up)
- Tournament mode that spits out a five-round packet with unique maps/scenarios and prints a PDF for players
- Map editor so TOs can upload custom terrain images
- CSV export to feed your own tracking spreadsheets (we know Data & Dice readers love their analytics)(dataanddice.com, dataanddice.com)
Have another idea? Something here miss the mark? Let me know in the comments or ping me on the KoWForums—nothing is locked in.
